Man falls prey to online fraud, loses 17 lakh

Chennai: A Chetpet man lost 17 lakh to online fraudsters on Sunday. Police said Sujith, 35, received a WhatsApp message saying he could earn high returns with a small investment. The message told him to click on a link to start the process.

Sujith clicked on the link, only to discover soon after that 17 lakh had been debited from his bank account. Police said that victims of online investment and part-time job scams are often targeted through fraudulent advertisements on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.



Scamsters provide links to fake stock trading apps and websites, enticing people to open and invest fake demat accounts with promises of high profits. They urged people to be cautious about ads promoting unusually high returns..
