Flapjacks are a popular sweet treat to make at home but by adding this one item, you can easily make them taste even more delicious. The delicious baked item is known for its versatility with many bakers choosing to add extra items to their batch. Some favourites include chocolate or even caramel but Mary Berry says there's one ingredient which is better than the rest.

The recipe reads: “The genius of this bake is its simplicity - but don’t let that fool you. What makes this one stand out from other flapjack recipes is the balance of butter, sugar, and syrup. Some versions go too dry or too sweet, but this one lands just right.

” And she revealed that you should add chopped dried apricots to your flapjacks which will create chewy sweet spots that break up the richness. To create these delicious flapjacks , you should first prep your tin by lining a square tin with baking paper. Next, you’ll need to melt the base.

To do this, on a saucepan, gently melt the butter, demerara sugar and golden syrup and stir until the sugar dissolves and everything is smooth. After this, take it off the heat and stir in the oats and chopped apricots. Press your mixture into the tin firmly - it’s a good idea to use a spatula to do this.

Now it’s time to bake your flapjacks so set your oven to 160C for 30 to 35 minutes. Your flapjacks should be pale golden, not too dark, once cooked. If the edges go brown too quickly, cover with foil halfway through.

Once you take them out of the oven, let them sit for 10 minutes, then score into squares while still warm. Flapjacks are very versatile, meaning you can experiment with various flavours. There are lots of other items you can add to your flapjacks such as chocolate or cranberries.

If you’d rather not add anything, even a basic flapjack with no added extras stands out as an unbeatable treat. To make your flapjacks more chewy and gooey, add extra golden syrup which is the key ingredient to achieving a great texture and classic, sweet flavour. You will need: 225g butter 225g demerara sugar 75g golden syrup 275g porridge oats Eight dried apricots.
