” The exhibit includes 12 sections that each represent an element of dandy fashion with particular focus on dress in the United States and Europe Ownership, Presence, Distinction, Disguise, Freedom, Champion, Respectability, Jook (a space for dancing, drinking and enjoyment) Heritage, Beauty, Cool and Cosmopolitanism. The evening will be a celebration of Black dandyism, an era of fashion in which Black men adopted the dandy aesthetic that was meticulous about grooming and tailoring. While dandies in the 18th and 19th century earned a reputation of being passionate about beauty and finery, adopting the trend was a form of rebellion and power for Black men.
Black dandies were not only able adopt but elevate attire and disrupt the traditional power structures between races and classes. Black dandies then, became representative of a culture shift.
