In a groundbreaking move for the Kannada film industry, Narasimha Murthy, a priest from the Siddehalli village near Bengaluru, has created a film with a modest budget and limited resources, using Artificial Intelligence (AI) instead of traditional actors, musicians, or crew. The result? Love You — Sandalwood’s first AI-generated film.
Murthy teamed up with Nuthan, a graphic designer who transitioned into AI technology, to bring his dream project to life. The entire project was completed in just six months with a budget of Rs 10 lakh, most of which went into software licensing. The 95-minute Kannada film, which has even earned a U/A certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), marks a big milestone for AI-generated filmmaking in India.
Together, this two-person team designed everything from the cast and soundtrack to the visuals and drone shots, relying on 30 different AI tools. Speaking to The Times of India, Narasimha Murthy said, as quoted by India Today, “I wanted to make the world’s first AI feature film and release it. To begin with, I’ll be screening it on just one screen to set the record.
" Talking about the CBFC’s concerns, he added, “Even the regional censor officer pointed out inconsistencies in the characters’ features from scene to scene. Creating emotional expressions was a challenge, and lip-syncing is far from ideal." Nuthan, the AI engineer for the film, noted how quickly AI tools are advancing, saying, “The tools we used are already six months old.
If we recreated the same film today, it would be a thousand times better." Everything in the film, including the characters, music, and visuals, was made digitally, setting a new example for low-budget regional films. The movie has 12 original songs and AI-generated dialogues, but Narasimha Murthy wrote all the lyrics and dialogues himself.
Murthy is working on two AI projects. One is about Bengaluru’s founder, Kempe Gowda, and the other about Immadi Pulikeshi. The first one will be ready in two months.
