The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) is pushing for mandatory drug tests for all prospective members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), as part of its broader efforts to combat drug abuse across Nigeria. Speaking at a “Training the Trainer” workshop held in Abuja on Saturday, NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen.
Buba Marwa (retd.), emphasized the need for early detection and intervention. The event, organised in partnership with Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries, was aimed at empowering religious and community leaders to educate youths, support families, and prevent substance abuse.
Marwa, represented by Mrs. Ngozi Madubuike, NDLEA’s Director of Drug Demand Reduction, said introducing drug tests at NYSC orientation camps could serve as both a deterrent and a means to offer timely support for those struggling with addiction. This initiative is part of the agency’s War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign, which focuses on reducing demand for narcotics and strengthening youth support systems.
Several universities and state governments have already adopted similar testing policies, and NDLEA continues to supply affordable test kits and trained personnel to facilitate the process. Despite facing some resistance, the agency is also advocating for drug screening in other sectors, including public service. “If young people know that drug testing is part of the NYSC process, many will steer clear of drugs,” Marwa said.
He underscored the importance of a collective response to the growing drug problem, noting that while NDLEA continues to enforce the law through arrests and seizures, addressing the root causes requires broader social and economic interventions..
