The Art in Poundbury CIC will be hosting the anticipated Poundbury Unwrapped exhibition at the Jubilee Hall on Great Canford Street in the development from Saturday, May 24 to Sunday, June 1. The Jubilee Hall is a venue on the biennial Open for Art trail taking place across Dorchester, Weymouth and surrounding areas. For the first time, Poundbury is the theme for the trail, giving the artists a chance to showcase their vibrant artistic interpretations of the model village conceived by the then Prince Charles.
Artists have been carefully selected for their unique approach to Poundbury, in hopes to reflect the multifaceted nature of the area and its distinctive architectural styles, as well as its layout of streets, alleyways, and squares. Featured artists include Mike Willdridge, Rebecca Guyett, Penny Treadwell, Mick O’Hea, Judy Tate, and Pam Philip, alongside 15 other members of the Art in Poundbury Club, each contributing their unique perspective on the community through their work. Judy Tate, Founder of Art in Poundbury and an artist exhibiting at Poundbury Unwrapped, was excited to get the exhibition under way saying: “It is a real privilege to be involved in this unique exhibition.
I am excited to see how Poundbury can inspire very different creative responses.” The exhibition in the hall off Queen Mother Square will be open daily from 10am to 4pm. Art in Poundbury aims to play a role in supporting community projects in Poundbury and Dorchester.
The organisation provides valuable opportunities for local artists to learn, showcase their talents, and foster a rich cultural environment in the community. The group works closely with the hospital and in September, around 90 artists took to a sunflower field in Dorchester to paint the day away for charity. Organisers added that, since its inception in October 1993, Poundbury has attracted much comment, both positive and negative, with architecture, design and a vision to capture the feel of the best parts of London.
They say that it now boasts a successful, thriving community that stands apart from many other new developments across the UK..
