Following the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, which revealed a tonne of information and new games for the system, a lot of discussion circulated around the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition versions of existing games. While some games like Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, Super Mario Odyssey and more are primed for free upgrades on the new handheld, other titles will have paid Upgrade Packs that improve visuals or add new content. But how much do these upgrades cost players?Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Packs have variable pricingNow weeks after the announcement of said upgrades, the official Nintendo UK website has revealed just how much you’ll have to fork out for the new Switch 2 Upgrade Packs for the new system.

Some games that offer minimum upgrades, such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, have a minor cost of just £7.99. However, titles that add a wealth of new gameplay content will cost extra.

Both Kirby and the Forgotten Land, which adds a brand-new expansion on Switch 2, and Super Mario Party Jamboree, which comes with the Jamboree TV add-on, have a larger price tag of £16.99 at the time of writing. At the time of publication, a number of Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Packs have yet to have their prices revealed including Pokemon Legends: Z-A and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond.

However, considering their smaller upgrades compared to the expansions seen in Kirby and Mario Party, we’d expect them to cost £7.99 just like Zelda.Upgrade Packs like Kirby and the Forgotten Land that come with additional content will cost more than a resolution and framerate boostThe cost of the Nintendo Switch 2 Upgrade Packs is an interesting approach for the company as it follows the Switch 2 philosophy of variable pricing.

While some gamers are upset with the high prices of titles like Mario Kart World, Nintendo is making more content-packed, expensive-to-develop titles significantly more expensive than smaller projects. This may sound like an obvious release plan, but it wasn’t a philosophy that was present during the lifecycle of the original Nintendo Switch. For the past generation, simple posts of WiiU titles would cost almost the same as a brand-new project, and that’s just not a great deal for gamers.
