Tobacco of the highest grade fetched as much as US$3.30 per kilogram, marking a substantial increase compared to the earlier days of the auction season.At the start of the season, top-quality tobacco was averaging only US$2.
28 per kilogram, while lower grades were going for as little as US$1.30.The recent rise in prices has sparked excitement among farmers, many of whom expressed renewed motivation and optimism for the future of their farming enterprises.
Several farmers stated that the better prices have inspired them to reinvest their profits into tobacco farming in order to produce even higher quality leaf next year.Speaking on the sidelines of the auction, Nyasa Tobacco Buying Limited Chairperson Fleetwood Haiya commended the farmers for bringing in top-notch tobacco.Haiya emphasized that his company is committed to rewarding quality by offering fair and attractive prices to farmers who put in the hard work.
He disclosed that Nyasa Tobacco Buying Limited has been working closely with about 2,000 farmers to improve tobacco quality through technical guidance and other forms of support.According to Haiya, the company is pleased to see a steady improvement in the quality of tobacco leaf being brought to the floors, which signals growth and potential in the industry.He added that Malawian farmers have enormous potential to produce world-class tobacco if given the right support systems.
Haiya highlighted the relevance of the government’s Agriculture, Tourism, and Mining strategy, stating that its success hinges on empowering key players like smallholder farmers.He further called on the government to consider rolling out more accessible agricultural loans that can help farmers boost productivity and improve quality.On its part, Nyasa Tobacco Buying Limited, being a fully indigenous Malawian company, pledged to continue offering competitive prices for top-quality tobacco.
