At the 17th edition of the Headies Awards, rapper Tochukwu Gbubemi Ojogwu professionally known as ‘OdumoduBlvck’ claimed the prestigious ‘Next Rated’ award, a category that honors up-and-coming talent in the music industry. The event, held on Sunday at the Landmark Event Centre in Lagos, was themed “Back to Base” and celebrated both cultural authenticity and creative innovation. OdumoduBlvck’s victory in the highly coveted category stood out as a defining moment of the evening.
In an emotional gesture, he invited his mother and crew members to the stage to share in his triumph. “She gave birth to me in her late thirties and always knew I was destined for greatness,” he shared, dedicating the award to his mother and acknowledging their deep connection. The night also marked a return to Nigeria after two years of hosting the ceremony in the United States.
The theme of the night emphasized the significance of staying rooted in one’s culture while pushing boundaries in the arts. Among the glittering crowd, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State made a special appearance, with numerous celebrities, industry leaders, and dignitaries gracing the red carpet. In addition to OdumoduBlvck, several other artists were recognized.
Liya won Best Vocal Performance (Female), Lojay took home Best Vocal Performance (Male), and Rema was awarded Afrobeats Album of the Year for his project HEIS. Davido was named Digital Artiste of the Year, while Zerry DL won Rookie of the Year. The late Mohbad was honored with a posthumous award, accepted by his family, and KCEE received the Special Recognition Award for his long-standing contribution to the industry.
The ceremony also recognized achievements across various categories, including Tribe Called Judah for Soundtrack of the Year, Tems for Best Recording of the Year, and OZEBA, who was awarded Producer of the Year. The night was also marked by the presence of Tanzanian singer Juma Jux and his wife, Priscilla Ojo, who made their first public appearance together..
