One dead, 11 injured in US tourist town shooting

"Last night could have been so much worse," authorities in a South Carolina tourist town said after a shooting left one person dead and 11 others injured.

In a statement, the department said "based on the immediate threat" an officer then shot one person, who died from their injuries.

Myrtle Beach Mayor Brenda Bethune told WBTW-TV the officer responded appropriately. The Horry County deputy coroner identified the person shot as 18-year-old Jerrius Davis, according to WBTW. "Our officer saw what happened, and when he saw that an altercation was taking place and a gun was being shot, the officer responded very quickly and in my opinion, saved lives," Horry County Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard said.
