MONROVIA, LIBERIA – April 22, 2025 – The Project Accountable Safe Space Women’s Accountability Room (PASSWAR) is calling on all Liberians to remain calm and peaceful as the National Elections Commission (NEC) begins the ballot counting process following the just-ended by-election in Nimba County. In a statement issued Monday, PASSWAR applauded the people of Liberia for their meaningful engagement in the electoral process and commended voters in Nimba for their turnout and participation in the by-election.The consortium of women-led grassroots organizations also acknowledged marked improvements in the overall conduct of the runoff election, particularly highlighting better queue control and the punctuality of polling center openings across the county.

“The NEC workers were generally helpful, and polling centers opened on time,” the statement noted, praising the electoral body for its management of the process. While no major incidents of Violence Against Women in Elections (VAWIE) were reported, PASSWAR pointed out persistent structural and societal barriers that continue to hinder women’s full participation in the democratic process. The organization emphasized the need for continued efforts to ensure that all citizens—especially women—can freely and safely exercise their right to vote.

In light of the polls closing and ballot counting now underway, PASSWAR urged all stakeholders, including political actors and the electorate, to uphold the peace and remain vigilant against the spread of misinformation and incitement.“We call on citizens to follow the rule of law and avoid resorting to violence. Liberia is all we have; let’s keep the peace,” the statement read.

PASSWAR is a collective platform of grassroots women’s organizations advocating for accountability, inclusion, and peaceful democratic processes. The consortium includes the African Women Leadership Network (AWLN), Community Health Initiative (CHI), Kids Educational Engagement Project (KEEP), Organization for Women and Children (ORWOCH), Paramount Young Women Initiative (PAYOWI), Women Human Rights Defenders of Liberia, Women NGO Secretariat of Liberia (WONGOSOL), Women of Positive Actions (WOPA), and Sister’s Hand Liberia. The post PASSWAR Urges Calm as Nimba By-Election Vote Count Begins appeared first on FrontPageAfrica.
