On Matheus Cunha's potential arrival to Manchester United in the summer, former midfielder Paul Scholes has offered a warning issue.

Manchester United are reportedly one of the leading candidates to snare Matheus Cunha’s signature in the summer months – and former engine room operator Paul Scholes ’ reaction to the links has caused something of a stir among the Old Trafford faithful. After receiving no shortage of interest in the January window, the Brazilian star put pen to paper on a new contract until June 2019 – which means that any would-be buyer (the Red Devils included) would need to pay his full release clause of £62.5 million.

GIVEMESPORT Key Statistic: Only four teams – Everton, Ipswich Town, Leicester City and Southampton – have scored fewer Premier League goals than Manchester United (39) in 24/25. Cunha, in 2024/25 alone, has been in excellent form; he’s notched 17 goals and a further six assists across all competitions – a tally that trumps that of Rasmus Hojlund (nine goals, four assists) and Joshua Zirkzee (seven goals, three assists). Scholes Issues Cunha Warning as Noise Ramp Up His favourable presence in the final third aside, Scholes – widely regarded as one of the greatest Premier League midfielders of all time – has issued a warning ahead of a busy summer, which may include the arrival of the ex-Atletico Madrid hotshot.

In his column for TNT Sports , Scholes waxed poetic about the 25-year-old by highlighting his athleticism in particular, though he questioned whether Manchester United are an attractive prospect for any player at this current moment in time. “He looks like he’s got the attributes that Ruben Amorim wants. He knows that physically, his team are just not strong or quick enough, so Matheus Cunha is obviously athletic, and he’s got quality with 15 goals this season.

I just worry for any signing coming to Manchester United at the minute." Manchester United are increasingly confident that Matheus Cunha is eager to seal a switch from Wolverhampton Wanderers As things stand, Amorim’s men are sat in 14th – just below Cunha’s current employers, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and are relying on winning the Europa League in order to secure Champions League action for the Portuguese’s first full season in the dugout. Scholes also worries about what position Cunha would play in Amorim’s system.

He wrote: “It just feels like it’s such a bad place to go. The quality of play right now is so poor. And with Cunha, is he a centre-forward or a wide player? There’s no doubt that he has the quality and, of course, it would be nice to sign him.

“But I worry about where he fits in. You can sign the three best players in the world, and I think they’ll struggle coming into this team at the minute. But they’ve got to start somewhere.

” Central defender-turned-pundit Rio Ferdinand – who is a former teammate of Scholes’ – replied to the Ginger Prince’s comments that somewhat threw the Red Devils under the bus. On X (formerly Twitter), he wrote: “Cheers Scholesy ffs.” According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Libson-born Amorim’s side are in ‘very advanced talks’ with Wolves over a potential summer move – with the next week or so being crucial in the race for the 13-cap Brazil international’s sought-after signature.
