Both Pinewood Prep soccer teams are aiming to return to the state finals. The Pinewood Girls wrapped up their schedule May 1 with a 10-0 mercy-rule victory over Northwood Academy. With the win, the Panthers improved to 16-5-1 on the season.
“We finished second in our region which is a credit to the team considering how many injuries we have,” said Pinewood coach Gail Osborne. “Multiple players have stepped up and we are still working hard and will fight until the end. Our goal is to still make it to the State Final.
” Pinewood finished 11-3 in its region, behind only undefeated Porter-Gaud. The Cyclones enter the playoffs 14-0. Sophomore Paisleigh Dasinger led the Panthers against North Wood, scoring five goals and assisting on another.
Junior Izabelle Pesce provided three goals and three assists. Freshman Cameron Savini scored a goal and assisted on another and junior Elizabeth Willis also found the net for the Panthers. Senior Hannah Birdsong had the shutout in goal.
Pinewood opens the playoffs at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 6 by hosting Cardinal Newman.
Pinewood Boys The Pinewood Boys finished their schedule with a 10-5-1 record. The team only dropped one region match, finishing at 7-1 in the region to win the region title. The Panthers won their final region match against John Paul II 5-1 to clinch the championship and improve their playoff seeding.
Senior Dylen Gauthier had two goals for the Panthers while sophomore Briggs Gwozdo, senior Harrison Reagin and juniors Nico Rivera and Philip Brueggemeir all scored a goal. Gwozdo had two assist while Reagin and Rivera had an assist each. The boys open the playoffs at 6 p.
m. Monday, May 5. Both Pinewood teams are the defending state champion for their division.
