Caldy started the game well scoring a try within the opening three minutes after Callum Ridgeway scored after a great catch from a lineout. Pirates hit back just minutes later with a carbon copy of the Caldy try when Harry Hocking caught the ball and dived over the whitewash. Caldy kept the pressure on and were rewarded on 23 minutes as Charlie Hyde scored after another great flowing move.
Pirates were unable to find any space to score and Caldy had opportunities to extend the lead but both teams defences played well and the visitors went in at half time with a 12-5 lead. The Pirates coaches must have given the players a good team talk at half time because the host came out of the blocks firing and the first try of the half came from Dan Hiscocks. Caldy were reduced to 14 men when Captain JJ Dickinson saw yellow, Pirates made the most of the extra man scoring a try on 50 minutes and again on 55 minutes.
When Dickinson returned Caldy managed to gain control of the game going into the final quarter. Veteran Nick Royle scored on 61 minutes. The 41-year-old still has the speed to keep pace at Championship level and went over in the corner.
Into the final ten minutes, Caldy were undone by a penalty that stretched the lead to ten points. As the game neared conclusion, Caldy pressured the Pirates defence. One final brilliant move involving Will Robinson and Royle, who kicked the ball through to Dom Hanson who scored to the joy of those who made the long journey.
Caldy first XV have next week off before they are back in action on May 3 when they play Doncaster Knights..
