In a groundbreaking move to reshape the project management landscape globally, the Project Management Institute has announced a new joint venture with Green Project Management, aimed at advancing sustainability at the heart of project execution worldwide. The agreement, unveiled recently, gives PMI a majority stake in the newly formed entity and transfers GPM’s widely respected sustainability-focused assets, including standards, frameworks, certifications, learning tools, and guides, into the joint venture. GPM, known as a pioneer in sustainable and regenerative project management, will retain its advisory and research functions and a minority share in the venture for at least the next five years.
This alliance is coming at a critical juncture as businesses, governments, and institutions across the globe face growing pressure to deliver not only profitable but also environmentally and socially responsible outcomes. According to PMI research, projects aligned with social good are almost twice as likely to succeed, yet only 22 per cent of projects meet that threshold today, highlighting a substantial opportunity to transform project outcomes through a more structured sustainability approach. The President and Chief Executive Officer of PMI, Pierre Le Manh, said, “Sustainability transformation is one of the biggest challenges of our time, and it won’t happen without projects.
This joint venture is about placing project professionals at the centre of that transformation. Also, the Managing Director, Sub-Saharan Africa, PMI, George Asamani, said, “Sustainability is not a luxury for Africa; it is essential. This partnership empowers project professionals across the continent to embed sustainability into every initiative, addressing urgent needs while laying the foundation for long-term prosperity.” Since 2022, PMI has incorporated GPM’s Sustainable Project Management certification into its global learning offerings.
This new collaboration builds on that foundation, deepening the integration and broadening the impact. On his part, the founder of GPM, Joel Carboni, said, “Project management must evolve beyond delivering outputs. Our work should regenerate ecosystems and build equity.
