As the world mourns the heartbreaking loss of Pope Francis , we're revisiting one his lesser-known forgotten roles in the indie feature film, Beyond the Sun. This week, the devastating news broke that Pope Francis , aka Jorge Mario Bergoglio, died at the age of 88 years old after suffering from a stroke and heart failure . While he is remembered as the inspiring leader and the Head of the Catholic Church for the past 11 years, he was also the first-ever pope to appear in a feature film .
In 2017, Pope Francis made an unexpected cameo appearance as himself in the Ambi Pictures indie film, Beyond the Sun. In the scene - which lasted approximately six minutes - Pope Francis was seen speaking before a group of children, preaching the teachings of Jesus at the Vatican. Reflecting on working with the world leader, co-director of the film, Graciela Rodriguez Gilio, sang the highest of praises for his talents in front and behind the camera.
She explained that the entire scene was improvised and was shot within half an hour, with Pope Francis taking the creative liberty to lead the charge. In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter , the psychiatrist and filmmaker said, "He is used to having cameras in front of him now. He would advise [the crew] and be like, ‘The light is better this way.
'" Rodriguez Gilio jokingly added, “I didn’t direct him. He was the one directing me.” According to IMDb , the synopsis of the film reads, "Beyond the Sun is a modern day tale of hope, faith and courage based on stories from the Bible.
This uplifting story is intended to spiritually engage and encourage audiences of all ages to live their best life, make good choices and help others. Featuring an awe inspiring appearance by His Holiness Pope Francis." But this is not the only film that Pope Francis has made an appearance in, he also starred in a documentary chronicling the story of his life.
The movie titled 'Pope Francis: A Man of His Word' was released in 2018 and directed by the talented German filmmaker Wim Wenders. The fascinating documentary touched on a number of subjects, including Pope Francis' concern for the poor and wealth inequality, his passion for environmental issues, and his lifelong endeavors to promote world peace. Wenders also spoke highly of the world leader as he reflected on their experience working together.
Wenders told BBC , "The Pope has the same presence as some of the greatest movie stars I’ve worked with. But it comes from inside, from his convictions and his faith, and from his desire to talk to all of us. He doesn’t have it because he’s full of himself; he’s incredibly modest — a real, humble man.
It’s not an act; he’s not an actor. He’s interested in everybody he meets, and in true communication." DAILY NEWSLETTER: Sign up here to get the latest news and updates from the Mirror US straight to your inbox with our FREE newsletter.
