Qatar tribune QNA Doha Charge d’Affaires at the Embassy of the Syrian Arab Republic to the State of Qatar, Dr Bilal Turkiya, emphasised that President Ahmed Al Sharaa’s visit to Doha marks a pivotal moment in the strong bilateral relations between the two countries. He noted that it reflects the depth of mutual respect and appreciation between their leaderships, as well as their shared commitment to developing and enhancing cooperation across various sectors to support Syria’s revival during this critical phase in its history. Speaking to Qatar News Agency (QNA), Dr Turkiya said the visit carries great symbolism, being the President’s first to Doha following the fall of the previous regime.

He added that it holds profound significance beyond the political and diplomatic context, as it embodies the special place held by the government and people of the State of Qatar, and by the Amir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, in the hearts of the Syrian people. He added that the leaders of both countries are meeting at this historic moment to reaffirm joint action and strategic integration, serving the interests of both peoples while enhancing Syria’s security, stability, and revival, matters of great importance to Qatar. Dr Turkiya noted that the fraternal meeting between the two leaders will address several key issues, primarily strengthening relations between the two nations, supporting development efforts, and coordinating on regional matters of mutual interest.

The Syrian envoy also praised the evolving relations between Qatar and Syria, stating that relations between the two countries are progressing rapidly, reinforced by reciprocal visits, culminating in the Amir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani’s official visit to Damascus on January 30, 2025 -- the first visit by a head of state to Syria. This was preceded by multiple visits at the foreign ministerial level, which reaffirmed the depth of ties between the two nations and their alignment in various fields. He continued that the Syrian-Qatari relations are strengthening day by day, driven by mutual openness and the shared determination to push relations to the highest levels.

He emphasized that Qatar has long demonstrated itself as a true partner to the Syrian people, standing by them in their hardships, supporting their legitimate demands, and presenting an exemplary model of noble humanitarian positions. Dr Turkiya further remarked that the State of Qatar has extended numerous sincere gestures to the Syrian people, the latest being its generous initiative to send two million cubic metres of gas a day to support electricity supplies, aimed at generating power across Syria to directly address the severe shortage of electricity and improve infrastructure performance. Dr Turkiya also praised the 27th Night of Ramadan Challenge initiative, which saw Qatari citizens donate QR 220 million for constructing and restoring residential cities in Syria, alongside numerous other humanitarian campaigns and initiatives that have made a significant impact on Syrians’ lives.

The Syrian Charge d’Affaires expressed his confidence that the State of Qatar possesses the capabilities and expertise to be a key partner in building the new Syria, developing its infrastructure, and boosting its economy. In this context, Dr Turkiya recalled President Ahmed Al Sharaa’s affirmation of Qatar’s role as a strategic partner in shaping Syria’s future as a country of freedom, institutions, and the rule of law, adding that they are looking forward to establishing solid partnerships across multiple sectors, from trade to energy and industry, education and culture to innovation, and other vital fields that serve the Syrian people.
