Pune records sudden drop in temperature, IMD says rainfall likely this week

Pune: Temperatures fell sharply in many parts of Maharashtra on Sunday, including in Pune where weather stations in Pashan, Lohegaon and Shivajinagar all reported readings below 40°C. Pashan saw a drop of 3.3°C while Lohegaon, which not two weeks ago had recorded 43°C (the season's highest), fell by 1.

5°C. Shivajinagar was down by 1.3 degrees.



On Saturday, the maximum temperature at Shivajinagar, Pashan and Lohegaon was 38.2, 40.6, and 41.

Many regions of the state, including Vidarbha, Marathwada, Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra are now expected to receive rainfall until Thursday. The IMD forecast till May 8 said: "Isolated to scattered light/moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds with speeds reaching 30-40 kmph, gusting to 50 kmph, is likely over Gujarat, Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada." It added that isolated hailstorm activity was also very likely in Madhya Maharashtra on May 6 and 7, and in Marathwada on May 7.

For Pune region, the forecast indicated thunderstorms in the ghat sections, accompanied by lightning and light to moderate rainfall. A similar forecast was out for several other districts including Palghar, Thane, Raigad, Ahilyanagar, Nashik, Satara, Chhatrapati Shambhajinagar, Jalna and Beed. Pune residents TOI spoke to said the drop on Sunday was a welcome relief, but added that conditions were still rather unpleasant.

"We still felt the heat, despite the dip in readings," said Pradip Kulkarni, a resident of Kothrud. "We continue to use air-conditioners during the day, especially in the afternoon hours. But a reduction in the night temperature was noticeable," he added.

Ashwini Pathak from Bavdhan said many continued to stay inside during the afternoon hours. "We try to finish all outside work by 11am. Or we schedule it for later in the day.

The dips did not make the weather here bearable," she said on Sunday. According to IMD's daily weather report, the conditions likely to bring rain to many regions included "an upper air cyclonic circulation over northern parts of Marathwada and neighbourhood".
