A junior doctor whose personal diary inspired a bestselling book and hit TV series hopes his comedy tour will leave New Zealand audiences with “something to think about” when it comes to how we treat our health professionals. UK comedian Adam Kay said while “95%” of his show This is Going to Hurt will focus on “funny and disgusting” anecdotes from his time working on a busy hospital ward, he hopes it also prompts conversations about the welfare of doctors and nurses. In an interview with Newstalk ZB’s Real Life with John Cowan that aired on Sunday night, Kay said patients don’t like to see their health providers as human and “essentially never” think about the demands their jobs place on them.
“I did an antenatal clinic in one particular hospital many years ago, every Wednesday evening for a year ...
a mismatch of number of staff to number of patients meant that a clinic that should have ended at 5pm always ended at 7-8pm,” he said..
