June 23, 1930 - April 28, 2025 Robert J. "Bob" Stender passed away peacefully on Monday, April 28, 2025 in Davenport. A visitation will be held on Saturday, May 3rd, from 1 to 3 p.
m., at the Runge Mortuary. His final resting place will be in Pine Hill Cemetery at a later date.
Memorials may go to the Mayo Clinic Foundation for education outreach, or a charity of your choice. In lieu of donations, please choose kindness toward others. It truly takes a village! Bob was born in Davenport on June 23, 1930, to Ernie and Florence (Mittman) Stender.
He married Janice Strathman in 1957, and they were married 56 years, until her passing in 2013. He worked most all of his career as a Branch Manager for Grant/Exide Battery Company. He retired in 1986 after a devastating post-surgical stroke.
He not only survived, but surpassed every goal given to him. He worked hard to learn to walk again and eventually went on to rake and mow not only his own yard, but the neighbors as well. He was a generous man who loved spoiling his grandsons, who were a source of joy to him.
His three great-grandbabies brought smiles for days. He even flew to South Carolina to attend his great-grandson's birthday party. Bob loved watching the Cubs, as well as Duke basketball.
Prior to his stroke, he could be found under the hood of a car, where he could fix most anything. He also loved his time boating on the Mississippi River. Those left to honor his memory include his son, Bruce (Gail); daughter, Jane, grandsons: Jacob and John (Sarah); great-grandchildren: Daniel, Benji and Margot.
His parents and his wife preceded him in death. The family would like to thank both Genesis VNA and of late, Genesis Hospice for the wonderful care shown to dad in our home. The support of his team was very much appreciated! His beloved caregiver, Brandie, who was with us to the end as well as his dear nurse, Amanda.
Thank you also to anyone who held open a door or smiled when dad handed out pens. To family and friends that supported throughout the days, Thank You! Your kindness will never be forgotten!
