A second-half rally breathed new life into Romeo’s soccer season. Clare Carmody’s goal broke a 1-1 tie with 16 minutes left, and the host Bulldogs went on to defeat Eisenhower 2-1 in a Macomb Area Conference Red Division match on a windy Monday night. It was the Romeo program’s first home victory over the Eagles, Bulldogs coach Trevor Foster said, and it moved them to the top of the division standings.

“We had an unfortunate draw last week (against L’Anse Creuse North),” Foster said. “Another draw or a loss tonight would have made it difficult. “This win keeps us in the division race.

” Junior Julie Sandoval scored to pull the Bulldogs into a 1-1 tie with 25:27 left in the second half. Twelve minutes earlier, Eisenhower midfielder Devyn Raymond scored on a free kick from about 30 yards out. The stage for Carmody’s goal was set when Sandoval crossed the ball into the box.

“Then Lexi Meier slithered it across to me, and I was able to get good contact on it,” said Carmody, a senior. “It was a great feeling to finally be up on Ike on our home field. This is great for our season.

” Romeo improved to 2-0-1 for seven points in the Red Division. Eisenhower fell to 2-1-0 for six points after losing for the first time (7-1-0) this season. “It was a big win for them,” Eagles coach Mehrdad Nekoogar said.

“I give Romeo a lot of credit. We had a lot of chances. Their goalie played great.

“It’s not the end of the world for us. It’s just one game. But we have to be ready to play our next game.

” The wind came from the south and blew across the field. “It was huge,” Nekoogar said. “We are a possession team, but we could play only one side of the field.

“It hurt us a lot, but it was just the same for them.” Foster agreed after his team improved to 4-2-1 overall. “It would have been nice to see these two teams play in better conditions, but it’s spring,” he said.

The Eagles had other scoring opportunities, including a free kick from 19 yards out and a cross delivered into the box by Ellera Jakubowski less than two minutes before halftime.

Eisenhower had two more corner kicks in the second half. Romeo had one. Isabella Stojanovski, Romeo’s junior keeper, made a diving save with her left hand with about 11 minutes to play.
