The Social Democratic party (SDP) has begun a drive for more members in Niger State just as it set up caretaker committees for the 25 local government areas. LEADERSHIP gathered that the party also appointed leaders for each of the three senatorial zones with a view to lure aggrieved members from both Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the ruling All progressive Congress (APC). Those appointed were Prof Rabiu Bello from Niger North, Musa Ma’ali former Speaker Niger State House of Assembly and Hussein Umar to lead the membership drive.

The state chairman, Barrister Yarima Buhari, who spoke on the party’s activities, disclosed that its pre-inaugural meeting was meant to announce the caretaker for the state and the local government executive committees. The chairman, who is also the Makaman Minna, disclosed that the 25 local government caretaker chairmen would identify ward chairmen for their respective areas for aggressive membership registration. He said the people have shown willingness to adopt SDP as the party for the state.

Buhari said “All members of SDP, especially those saddled with positions of responsibility should see the coming of SDP as a new beginning which should be taken seriously as the party is poised to take up the leadership of the nation,” he said. The chairman of elders consultative committee, Hussaini Umar expressed confidence that with the rise in high profile membership of SDP success was assured. He however called on all members to evoke the culture of hard work .

He reiterated the need for unity and cooperation at all times pointing out that the time for mobilisation has begun. Another party leader from Niger North, Prof Bello, enjoined party members to remain dogged in the struggle as the new beginning required hard work and promptness. We’ve got the edge.
