Shimmer’s fate in The Last of Us is something the show could change

You’re right to be worried about Shimmer in The Last of Us Season 2, but it could be a good opportunity to change her fate in Part 2.

If you’ve played The Last of Us Part 2, you may be a bit worried about what happens to Shimmer – but the horse could have a different fate in Season 2. The Last of Us has always been cruel; think about Henry and Sam , or David and the cannibals of Silver Lake. Sometimes, those left to roam the wasteland will envy the dead, because at least they’re free from all of the fear and pain.

The second season hasn’t pulled its punches, with Episode 2 adapting the game’s most harrowing, shocking moment: Joel’s death at the hands of Abby, the vengeful daughter of a Firefly doctor slain by Joel as he rescued Ellie from fatal, world-saving surgery. With Episode 3 sending Ellie and Dina to Seattle, there’s something you should know: the worst is yet to come. However, Shimmer could live to see peaceful pastures.

Does Shimmer die in The Last of Us? Shimmer dies in The Last of Us Part 2 , but it’s unclear if Ellie’s horse will be killed in the same way – or at all – in Season 2. Admittedly, there isn’t a lot of backstory with Shimmer. She’s assigned to Ellie after they come to Jackson, and Ellie and Dina take Shimmer when they leave for Seattle.

However, in the game, things go very wrong. As they ride through the city, they accidentally set off a trap mine that sends them all flying. Amazingly, Ellie and Dina survive and don’t sustain many injuries – but the same can’t be said for Shimmer, whose legs are broken by the explosion.

Related The Last of Us viewers are threatening to stop watching after Joel’s death Soon after, WLF troops emerge to confront them, and one of the soldiers (Mike) shoots Shimmer in the head. Don’t worry, they get their vengeance: later, Dina shoots and kills him. How The Last of Us could change Shimmer’s death Shimmer’s death in The Last of Us Part 2 is sudden and difficult to watch, but there’s a simple reason it may not unfold in the same way this time: the HBO show isn’t a game.

What do I mean by that? Well, if you were riding a horse and you set off a mine, the chances of you coming away from that unscathed are near-impossible. Games operate differently from television; characters can endure way more than they would in real life, no matter how ‘realistic’ a game claims to be. Think about how The Last of Us does action.

Even in Season 1, Joel wasn’t using an assortment of weapons in his backpack to merk everyone who stood in his way, nor did he use an explosive bow and arrow to kill Abby’s dad. The violence was stripped back, with firefights a desperate and dangerous last resort. In other words, just as Season 2 won’t unleash Ellie to the same extent as Part 2 (if you haven’t played it, look up some gameplay clips on YouTube to see how Ellie basically becomes superhuman), Shimmer may not be killed under the same slightly unbelievable circumstances.

Or, if we’re really lucky, Shimmer won’t die at all. Maybe she’ll be stored away somewhere safe, away from the rain in Seattle, and she’ll get to come back to Jackson..
