Simon Pegg has told of the freezing weather the cast and crew from the upcoming Mission impossible film dealt with while filming in Norway. In a wide ranging interview on Friday’s Late Late Show , the Shaun of the Dead star chatted with host Patrick Kielty about Mission: Impossible - Final Reckoning, working with Tom Cruise and filming in minus 40C temperature. “That was Svalbard, which is an island north of Norway , and it was -40C,” he told Patrick.

“And we literally had to stop shooting three times to allow polar bears to walk through the set, which even Tom Cruise can't stop polar bears from doing their business. “The conditions were just, you know, mind boggling. We were filming on a frozen sea.

So the only thing stopping us from drowning in ice cold water was colder water, which had frozen into a solid kind of mass. “We were living on a ship, on an icebreaker, and we would play poker in the evening and in the galley and eat snacks, and in the day, we'd go out and do crazy stuff.” Simon also reflected on his love for snowboarding, sharing that Tom Cruise had bought him a snowboard for his birthday.

“I love snowboarding. And I discovered snowboarding when I was shooting Ghost Protocol in 2010. “And you're not really allowed to go snowboarding when you're filming, because if you break something, the insurance won't cover it.

“You sign a thing before you start a movie, as you know, that says, I won't do this and that and this and that, which could endanger me. “But I did it. And then Tom bought me a snowboard for my birthday.

So I figured that was just to go, ‘Okay, you're fine, you can do it. So I just went up every weekend whilst in Vancouver, and now it's something I can't live without.” Subscribe to our newsletter for the latest news from the Irish Mirror direct to your inbox: Sign up here .
