WILLMAR — The Willmar softball team made a late charge to get the victory over Sauk Rapids on Tuesday at the Willmar Civic Center softball fields.Tied 3-3 through five innings, the Cardinals put up four runs in the bottom of the sixth to secure a 7-3 win.“It took a whole team effort to keep the energy up for all seven innings,” said Cardinals head coach Breanna Tupa.
“I am proud of every single one of those girls and their mental resilience.”Freshman Grace Kalkbrenner pitched all seven innings for Willmar. The right-hander struck out seven, allowing seven hits and two walks.
She was also 1-for-3 with a run scored.Eighth-grader Brynnlee Carroll was 2-for-4 with a triple, three RBIs and a run scored. Hannah Magnuson scored a pair of runs and drove in another in a 1-for-3 effort.
Willmar next plays Rocori at 5 p.m. Thursday in Cold Spring.
