A United Kingdom-based Nigerian political activist, Wisdom Opara, has called for an emergency summit of Igbo youths in the Diaspora amid what he perceives as escalating violence and a string of deadly attacks allegedly carried out by armed herdsmen in southeastern Nigeria, Opara, speaking in response to the most recent wave of killings in the country, emphasized the urgent need for collective action by young Igbo professionals and activists living abroad. He expressed frustration at what he described as the failure of Southeast political leaders to protect their communities. “We have decided to host Igbo youths in the Diaspora to discuss and strategize on what must be done to stop the killings by criminal Fulani herdsmen,” Opara stated.
“We in the Diaspora must act now because the political leaders entrusted with the security of our people have failed,” he added. The activist decried the continued attacks in Enugu, Ebonyi, and Anambra states, where communities have reportedly been devastated by armed herdsmen in recent weeks. According to local reports, several villages have been attacked, leading to deaths, displacement, and destruction of property.
“The issue of Fulani herdsmen has turned into a nightmare,” Opara said. “These attacks have reached a boiling point. “We can no longer stand aside and watch our people massacred.
” We cannot continue to rely on compromised leaders who fear confronting this menace.” Opara warned that failure to act could lead to further invasions and permanent displacement of indigenous communities. He blamed the lack of political will in the region and accused leaders of aligning with powerful interests at the expense of their people.
“The situation will only get worse if we remain idle. ” This is a desperate time, and it calls for a significant shift in strategy. ” Everything will be on the table at this summit — no stone will be left unturned,” he asserted.
The proposed maiden edition of the Igbo Youths Diaspora Summit is set to be held in the United Kingdom, with follow-up meetings planned across Europe and Asia. “In history, Igbo youths have always risen against injustice. “We must come together once more to resist evil, protect our communities, and stop this invasion,” he added.
The summit, according to Opara, will serve as a platform for brainstorming sustainable solutions, amplifying voices of victims, and setting up cross-border collaborations to influence policy and security interventions in Nigeria..
