Jordan Thompson has confirmed his season is over after being stretchered off during Stoke City's Good Friday win over Sheffield Wednesday. The 28-year-old utility man, Stoke's longest-serving first teamer, hit the deck after sending in a cross in what seemed an innocuous second-half incident at the bet365 Stadium during a 2-0 win. He had made a huge impact after coming on at left-back following an injury to Eric Bocat.
He had been unfortunate to lose his spot in central midfield after playing a starring role in a 1-0 win over Cardiff the previous weekend. They are two results that have catapulted Stoke a long way to safety in the Championship. Thompson left the stadium with his ankle in a protective boot, and although the injury hasn't yet been confirmed, Thompson says he will miss the remaining three games - away at Leeds United today (3pm), at home to Sheffield United on Friday (8pm) and at Derby County on May 3.
The Northern Ireland international is out of contract in the summer but has staked his claim for a new deal since Mark Robins took charge in January while he was recovering from a hernia operation. There had been interest at that time from AIK Stockholm but he wanted to try to earn a new deal at Stoke. He wrote on social media: "Massive win and top team.
Proud of the boys and the support has been brilliant. Gutted to pick up an injury that rules me out for the rest of the season. Not the way I wanted it to end, but that’s football.
Time to back the lads for the final three, let’s finish strong!" While you're here, we have launched a new WhatsApp group to deliver the latest Stoke news directly to your phone.
