CHICO — Long ago I wrote about potential scammers showing up on your door step or poking around in yards. When you confront them, they say they are with a legitimate organization checking water or gas meters. They might say PG&E, they might say something like Cal Water.

But really they are just some creep.Folks have once again been reporting these weirdos bouncing around to different houses. Before I go too much further, there are also legitimate workers checking on these things throughout the county.

What is frustrating about the scammers is that they erode trust in those just doing their job.At best, many of these scammers are going to try to convince you to give them personal information, such as bank account numbers, to settle some kind of fake debt or upgrade your current system. At worst, they are casing houses.

One clear giveaway is that these scammers often wear either street clothes or generic jumpsuits. If anyone comes to your door claiming to be with an organization and asking for personal info, don’t give it to them. Originally, I might have said to ask them for proof of identification but I’d guess that is getting easier to fake.

Instead, get their name and then go inside and call the organization they are claiming to be with. Provide the name and ask to speak with someone who can verify. If someone refuses to leave your property or becomes hostile, lock your door and call 911.

Stay safe out there folks and enjoy the nice weather.Related ArticlesBe cautious of land selling scams, especially after fires | Scam of the WeekEndless solicitation in a world full of ads | Scam of the WeekNo, your state tax refund won’t expire | Scam of the WeekCredit card scam moving across nation | Scam of the WeekBeware disaster fraudsters during tax season | Scam of the WeekScam of the Week generally runs every Tuesday.
