Qatar tribune QNA Damascus Charge d’Affaires at the Embassy of the State of Qatar to the Syrian Arab Republic, HE Khalifa Abdullah Al Mahmoud, affirmed that the official visit of the President of the Syrian Arab Republic, Ahmed Al Sharaa, to Qatar represents a new step towards greater openness and coordination on various political, economic, and humanitarian issues. In an exclusive interview with Qatar News Agency (QNA), the envoy said the visit by President Ahmed Al Sharaa falls within the framework of strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries and discussing avenues of joint cooperation to serve the interests of the two brotherly peoples. He noted that the visit carries significant connotations, particularly at a time marked by rapid transformations across the regional landscape.

He stated that the current phase of Qatari-Syrian relations is characterised by a clear political will on both sides and a spirit of openness and mutual respect, paving the way for rebuilding trust and activating cooperation mechanisms in priority areas. He explained that what distinguishes this phase is a realistic approach to challenges and a shared desire to formulate a new path forward based on mutual interests, away from past tensions. Regarding Qatar’s role in supporting Syria, the Chargé d’Affaires emphasised that Doha has consistently maintained a presence in Syrian humanitarian efforts, particularly in the fields of education, health, and relief.



He noted a growing interest in exploring opportunities to support early economic recovery, which would help alleviate the suffering of the Syrian people and enhance stability. He also pointed out that serious consideration is being given to future investment projects that could mark the beginning of a joint economic revival. Regarding the return of Qatari diplomatic representation to Damascus, he explained that the step followed a careful assessment of the prevailing circumstances and recent developments.

He emphasised that Qatar’s position has remained steadfast in supporting the aspirations of the Syrian people, and that the resumption of diplomatic activity is not merely symbolic, but rather a practical step aimed at bridging differing viewpoints and fostering an atmosphere conducive to constructive dialogue. He also pointed to the mutual readiness to develop relations on the ground through reciprocal visits, meetings between institutions, and discussions on ways to implement joint projects with a tangible impact, indicating that joint work and exchange of experiences constitute a fundamental pillar for achieving real progress at the development and economic levels. In this context, Al Mahmoud affirmed that Qatar and Syria have effectively entered a new phase of cooperation based on clarity, trust, and integration, with a focus on supporting stability, contributing to reconstruction, and activating partnerships in the economic and cultural fields, indicating that relations between the two countries are based on solid historical and fraternal ties and that the next phase will include joint construction and stability in the field of cooperation.

Al Mahmoud concluded his interview with the QNA by emphasizing Qatar’s belief in the importance of Arab and humanitarian cooperation, and that strengthening relations between brotherly countries in the region will have a positive impact on regional security and stability. Copy 16/04/2025 10.
