Tennis players named Old Dominion Male and Female Athletes of the Year

Cosme Rolland De Ravel and Sofia Johnson, who have led the Monarchs to the top of the Sun Belt Conference, gain high honors with ODU.

Old Dominion hosted the annual Golden Monarch Awards on Monday night at Chartway Arena, and the Male and Female Athletes of the Year were both No. 1 tennis players on championship teams.Cosme Rolland De Ravel, a Frenchman who led the Monarchs to the Sun Belt regular-season and tournament titles and was the conference Player of the Year, and Sofia Johnson, a Brit who reached the NCAA singles championship tournament’s second round in the fall and is 14-2 at No.

1 this spring, earned the top honors. Johnson’s team is unbeaten in the conference and seeded first at this week’s conference tournament.Numerous other honors were handed out at the ceremony.



Among them:Male Freshman of the Year: quarterback Colton Joseph, who received Sun Belt football honorable mention after starting eight games. Hecompleted 133 of 222 passes for 1,627 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions, and ran for 647 yards and 11 TDs on 114 carries.Female Freshman of the Year: Sarah Murrell, who has 42 goals and five assists in 14 lacrosse games.

She is a six-time American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Week.Newcomer of the Year: Zach Leite leads ODU and is sixth in Sun Belt baseball with a .346 batting average.

He leads ODU with nine doubles and is second with 22 RBIs.Breakthrough: Koa Naotala, a third-team all-conference football honoree from Newport News, led ODU and finished 10th in the Sun Belt with 88 tackles.Best Sports Moment: Robert Davis Jr.

’s 3-pointer with one second left gave ODU a 64-61 victory over Texas State in the Sun Belt tourney’s second round.Best Individual Performance: Men’s swimmer Bryce Mortimer won the 200-yard breaststroke at the College Swimming Coaches Association of America championships in 1 minute, 55.54 seconds.
