The official entry of Thalapathy Vijay into the political arena has been one of the most widely talked about topics of Indian entertainment in the past few months. As the actor prepares to take his final bow on screen with his last film Jana Nayagan, several stories and what-could-have-beens are coming about all over, including one from critically-acclaimed filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj. Speaking to Galatta Plus recently, Karthik Subbaraj talked about having considered working with Vijay for the actor’s swan song.
"I had pitched multiple scripts to Vijay over the years, but never worked out," the director candidly revealed. Acknowledging the missed opportunities, he said, “I’ve pitched several scripts to Thalapathy Vijay, but the scripts didn’t become a success. I confess that I’m not the greatest narrator.
I auditioned for Thalapathy 69 and ended up narrating the film to them, but things didn’t work out. By the time I came up with anything else, he’d settled on H. Vinoth.
” H. Vinoth is directing Vijay's last movie, which was first known as Thalapathy 69, and is currently called Jana Nayagan. It is a defining phase in the actor’s journey as the political action thriller will reflect on Vijay’s reel life as well as real life transformation from films to public service.
It’s set to be released in theaters Jan. 9, 2026, and is being developed — with a jury-bus rumor of a possible Netflix tie — as an appropriate tribute to his storied career. Rumours of a possible project between Vijay and Karthik Subbaraj have floated for long, but the duo never collaborated.
They also speculated that Subbaraj’s next project, Retro, featuring Suriya, was originally written with Vijay in mind. The director has since clarified that the claims are false. ..' While Jana Nayagan readies to be Vijay’s last cinematic hurrah, Karthik Subbaraj is also in the news for his work Retro, a movie that’s generated some insane excitement among fans.
Retro is scheduled to hit theaters on May 1, 2025, and will face competition from HIT 3, the third film in the cop thriller series led by Nani and helmed by Sailesh Kolanu. With the countdown underway for each of these high-profile releases, audiences are ready for a bittersweet farewell to Vijay’s acting career, and a delightfully promising new cinematic experience from Subbaraj..
