The rollout of the Android 16 Beta 4 includes changes for the regular Pixel line and also fixes an issue within the Pixel Fold line. According to Android Headlines, Google has introduced a new setting called ‘robust open and close detection,’ which will only be available for the Pixel Fold and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. The setting reportedly enhances the Fold’s ability to determine whether the phone is open or closed.

This upgrade will best support users who have MagSafe accessories and cases. These cases have interfered with the hinge angle sensor, causing issues like unintended screen transitions or apps randomly switching displays. As one can imagine, this gets quite annoying fast.

If the current beta is downloaded onto a Fold or a 9 Pro Fold device, it can be selected by going to the Settings app and tapping Display & Touch. However, Google warns that this feature can increase battery usage, which in return can decrease battery life. The Android 16 beta rolled out yesterday and includes features like the Always On Display getting a pop of colour and the return of Do Not Disturb to the Quick Access Menu , among others.

As mentioned earlier, this is the final beta version for the latest Android version, and the final version is expected to launch in June. Most of this Android update is expected not to be flashy; it should include many under-the-hood changes, like this change to the Pixel Fold line’s hinge detection. This setting should make the final version, but it could easily roll into the QPR1 update.
