This Alt It Bag Has Won Over The Fashion Crowd

JW Anderson’s unique Loafer bag – which is inspired by classic penny loafers – has been a hit among stylish stars. Vogue brings everything to know about JW Anderson’s Loafer bag.

The defining qualities of It bags designed by Jonathan Anderson are far from conventional. The Puzzle , a bag released early on during his tenure at Loewe, is realised in a slouched origami silhouette, while the Loafer bag – the latest feat at his eponymous brand – borrows details from a classic penny loafer (as its name suggests). It has an enlarged penny keeper flap on the front, statement hand-sewn box stitching, a bottom part that echoes a sole and a handle that emulates a welt.

In the words of the brand, the shoe is “deconstructed and reconstructed in bag form”. The Loafer was the only bag shown on the runway for both his men’s and women’s spring/summer 2025 offerings, styled with voluminous jackets at the former and thigh-grazing minidresses at the latter. Shortly after its release, the Loafer became an immediate hit among Anderson’s fervid loyals, that includes Tilda Swinton, Tracee Ellis Ross and campaign star, Alison Oliver.

In an accessories era when minimalist styles like The Row’s Margaux are leading with charge – and when classic bags like Hermès Kellys and Birkins dominate the second-hand market – it’s refreshing to see an alt silhouette vying for fashion insiders’ attention. The Loafer has had a similar effect to its curvaceous counterpart, the Bumper , which debuted for spring/summer 2022 and was quickly snapped up by his fanbase: Naomi Campbell, Alexa Chung and Emily Ratajkowski, to name but a few. Available in three sizes – small being 18 by 28.

5 by 8 centimetres; medium 23.5 by 34 by 13 centimetres and large a roomy 29 by 47.5 by 18 centimetres – crafted from either leather or suede, in a multitude of colours including black, off white, lemonade, tan, khaki, navy and chocolate brown, there’s a Loafer for every requirement.

To expand: the small size is well-suited to everyday outings, while the capacious version is perfect for lugging a laptop (and more) in. Take your pick..
