PRESIDENT Xi Jinping’s visit to Malaysia from today till April 17 holds symbolic and practical significance, especially against the backdrop of shifting geopolitical alignments, intensifying US–China rivalry, and the strengthening of Asean’s regional role. Malaysia was the first Asean country to establish diplomatic ties with the People’s Republic of China in 1974. Last year marked the 50th anniversary of this historic decision, and was celebrated with numerous high-level exchanges.
