International students at UNLV are facing increasing uncertainty as visa revocations continue to affect their status in the United States. In a recent confirmation by the university, three more international students have had their visas revoked, following the four already impacted earlier this month. This rise in visa issues at UNLV mirrors a troubling trend nationwide, with over 1,000 students from various institutions caught in a sweep that has raised concerns about due process and the immediate risk of detention and deportation.
In response to this escalation, UNLV has taken steps to support the affected students. The university has not publicly identified any of the impacted individuals, citing federal privacy laws. However, the situation has prompted legal action from several students across the country, as they sue for relief.
According to a statement from university officials to Fox5 Vegas, "We’re moving forward with calm, care, and support to ensure that our students and scholars from around the world continue to know that they belong here."The university's senior executive director of UNLV Global, Lindsey Gruber, also reinforced the institution's stance in a letter to the campus community. "UNLV deeply values the rich diversity of perspectives and experiences that our international students and scholars bring to the Rebel family," Gruber wrote.
UNLV officials have expressed that there is no clear pattern to these visa terminations, highlighting the arbitrary nature of these revocations and the distress it has caused among the student and scholar community.UNLV is currently working with both the Nevada System of Higher Education and the state of Nevada to advocate for those impacted. The university also monitors the federal SEVIS database to stay informed about visa status changes.
A university spokesperson revealed to Channel 13 that, "like many other institutions, we've learned about the visa revocations/terminations through the federal SEVIS [Student and Exchange Visitor Program] database, which university officials routinely monitor."
