The Until Dawn movie is bringing one of the best PlayStation games of the modern era to life on the big screen – and if you want to watch it on streaming, this is where it will drop. The new horror film, directed by David F. Sandberg (Lights Out, the Shazam movies), isn’t a one-to-one adaptation of the game.
It doesn’t take place at the Washington Lodge, nor does it star Rami Malek, Hayden Panettiere, or anyone else you’d expect to see ( except Peter Stormare as Dr Hill ). Instead, it follows a new cast of characters. A year after her sister goes missing, Clover and her friends try to figure out what happened – and their investigation leads them to a remote valley and a seemingly empty house that traps them in a deathly time loop.

It’s arriving hot on the heels of Sinners , Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan’s smash-hit vampire movie that dethroned A Minecraft Movie on the US charts. Word of mouth has been incredibly strong (it’s among the most well-reviewed films of the decade), so it’s expected to perform even better in its second weekend.
That could be a bit of an issue for Until Dawn, as part of its audience may be too busy watching Sinners. It needs to appeal to those who’ve played the game, and like Minecraft has proved, it can be enormously successful if it connects with fans. But A Minecraft Movie also wasn’t hailed as a must-see after its first trailer, so perhaps it will still do well after it comes to theaters. Speaking to FILMHOUNDS , Sandberg said a straight adaptation of the game wouldn’t live up to “the awesomeness of the game.” “I like that [Gary Dauberman and Blair Butler] did sort of an expansion of the universe, rather than trying to recreate what’s already been.
So it’s almost like a sequel, or it’s more Until Dawn rather than the same Until Dawn,” he said. Where to stream Until Dawn Until Dawn will eventually be available to stream on Netflix in the US. This is thanks to Sony’s deal with the streaming service.
The studio struck an agreement with Netflix in 2021, granting the streamer exclusive US rights to its theatrical releases once they’ve left cinemas. As Netflix explained, “Under the deal, Netflix will obtain first pay window rights to SPE titles following their theatrical and home entertainment windows.” In simpler terms, once Until Dawn leaves cinemas, it’ll drop on VOD platforms (like Amazon Prime) where people can buy or rent it digitally.
However, for those who want to stream it via one of their subscriptions, it’ll be available on Netflix first. When will Until Dawn be on Netflix? While unconfirmed, Until Dawn will likely be available to stream on Netflix by August 2025 . You just need to look at the timelines for other Sony films: Madame Web took exactly three months to come to Netflix, while Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire came to the streamer after 130 days.
It all depends on box office performance; that’s why Madame Web came to Netflix after three months, so just keep your eyes peeled. When will Until Dawn be on digital? Until Dawn could be available on digital as early as late May, if not early June 2025. Sony hasn’t announced its digital release date, but you can look at other films from the studio and make a reasonable estimate.
For example, Heart Eyes was released in cinemas on February 7 and it hit digital platforms on March 4, while Kraven the Hunter came to digital after 32 days. Again, if Until Dawn overperforms at the box office, it could stay in cinemas for a little longer, so keep your eyes peeled for an official announcement. Until Dawn hits cinemas on April 25.
