FORMER University of Mindanao (UM)-Davao City standout Sonny Wagdos delivered a silver-medal performance for the Philippines in the 2025 Singapore Open Track and Field Championships held Thursday, April 24, at the National Stadium in Singapore. The 31-year-old long-distance runner clocked 14 minutes and 53.23 seconds in the men’s 5,000-meter open event, finishing behind Indonesia’s Daniel Simanjuntak, who took gold at 14:47.
79. Singapore’s Shaun Boon Hee Goh settled for bronze at 15:05.32.
"Happy gyud kaayo ko, Ma'am, and thankful nga medyo nakabalik na akong kusog (I'm really happy, Ma'am, and thankful that I've somewhat regained my strength),"said Wagdos, who also won silver in the 5,000m at the 32nd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, in a Messenger interview with SunStar Davao. Though he fell short of beating his personal best of 14:34, Wagdos remained optimistic, viewing his performance as a strong start to his SEA Games buildup. He said, "First race nako ni sa oval balik kay sige ko ga road competitions.
Medyo lisud pa, unya two months pa lang akong oval training pag-usab (This is my first race back on the oval since I’ve been focused on road competitions. It’s still a bit tough, and I’ve only been back to oval training for two months)." He explained, "More on speed workout man gud ang oval, Ma'am, while ang marathon more on endurance sila pero sa road pirmi naay padula always, bihira lang oval (The oval is mainly for speed workouts, Ma'am, while marathons focus more on endurance.
Road races happen all the time, but oval competitions are rare)." Next for Wagdos is the Philippine Athletics Championships set for May 1 to 4, 2025, at New Clark City in Capas, Tarlac. The 2025 Southeast Asian Games will be hosted by Thailand from December 7 to 19, with most events taking place in Bangkok.
