(Foreword: This is the continuation of our response to the queries of AL ejf on which drink is bad for stroke.)Dear AL ejf,Moving on to more drinks now. We are now on artificially-sweetened beverages, like packed juices, milkshakes, and the like.
In the Women’s Health Initiative Observational Study of postmenopausal women, a higher intake of these drinks was associated with increased risk for all stroke, coronary heart disease, and all-cause mortality. Moreover, in the Framingham Heart Study Offspring cohort, this revealed that consumption of one can of diet soda or more each day, as compared to none, was associated with a nearly threefold increased risk for stroke and dementia over a 10-year follow-up period. However, since most observational studies are mixed and likely very confounded by other diet and lifestyle factors, a daily diet soda is probably fine, but just don’t go overboard.
I hope Tatay Digong will settle for one drink a day for Diet Coke...
hehe..Since evidence on alcohol use and stroke risk has been mixed over the years, this was suggestive that a moderate amount of alcohol daily, which means one to two drinks in men and one drink in women, may be good for reducing major vascular issues.
Furthermore, the American Heart Association (AHA)/American Stroke Association (ASA) recommends a maximum of two drinks per day for men and one drink per day for women to reduce the risk of stroke. However, if you want to have a well-functioning brain as you grow older, you'd better stay away from alcohol because studies have found that no matter what amount of alcohol you are drinking, whether moderately or not, this would not be good for your brain cells.I hope this helps! Good luck! -Dr.
