Katherine Heigl believes in the good of limiting her kids' screen time. After all, the Grey's Anatomy alum discovered that her and husband Josh Kelley 's daughters Naleigh , 15, and Adalaide , 13, have become "far more creative" people after reducing their phone usage to only certain days of the week. "Naleigh has started baking and cooking a lot because I now I have a rule about the phone: They don't get it three days a week and they only get it after school," Heigl exclusively told E! News' Francesca Amiker .
"Adelaide, she talks about wanting to be an actress." The 46-year-old—who also shares son Joshua , 8, with the country singer—said she implemented the policy as a way to "mitigate" how much time her kids spend online, allowing them to find ways to entertain themselves without the internet. "Modern moms have to really deal with that in a way that our mothers did not," Katherine explained.
"I have always felt like I can't take it away completely, because then they aren't really in the world. All their friends are on it and all their the schoolwork is on it." The parenting hack has also led Adalaide to develop a closer bond to her younger sibling.
"She and her brother have been starting to play music together," Katherine shared. "Adelaide is playing the electric guitar, Joshua's playing the drums—and they're actually really good." The 27 Dresses star continued, "It's really kind of beautiful to watch them do this together, and watch them be excited and interested in something other than their devices and their phones.
" And family is everything to Katherine, who works alongside her mom Nancy Heigl at the Jason Heigl Foundation , an animal advocacy organization named after her late brother. In fact, she said her Badlands Ranch dog food brand has "afforded us the opportunity" to keep many of the non-profit's programs running. "It's been pretty incredible," Katherine gushed, calling Badlands Ranch—which focuses on premium ingredients for canine health—the "biggest blessing" for the foundation.
"The pet overpopulation crisis in our country is a solvable problem. It's just going to take time, money, effort and dedication." The Firefly Lane actress added, "And as the years have gone by, I've become more and more and more invested.
