A Windsor-Essex program supporting African Canadian youth confront substance use challenges has been given a new name. The Windsor Essex Community Health Centre (weCHC) on Friday announced the launch of AMANI — the new name for what was previously known as the Substance Abuse Program for African Canadian and Caribbean Youth. Despite the name change, officials said the mission to provide Black youth with culturally responsive mental health and substance use support remains the same.
“AMANI represents a space where Black youth can find culturally affirming care and meaningful support,” said weCHC director of clinical practice Nadine Manroe-Wakerell. “This evolution strengthens our commitment to ensuring youth have access to the resources they need to heal, grow, and thrive.” AMANI reflects a broader focus on holistic wellness, moving beyond substance use to ensure Black youth and their families receive comprehensive and compassionate care.
The program continues to provide the same trusted services without disruption, reinforcing its role as a vital resource in the community, according to weCHC . “This is more than just a name change — it’s a reflection of our values and the work we do every day,” executive director Nancy Brockenshire said. “Equitable access to care means ensuring Black youth have safe, culturally affirming spaces where they feel heard and supported.
