A Winnipeg teacher is facing serious charges after police say he used social media to develop an inappropriate relationship with a teenage student over several months. Ketan Badiani, 58, was arrested on April 11 following an investigation by the Winnipeg Police Service’s Child Abuse Unit. He has been charged with sexual assault, sexual exploitation, and luring a person under 18 through telecommunications.
Police allege Badiani, who was employed at a school in the Fort Garry neighbourhood, began privately messaging a female student in her mid-teens in October 2024. The contact continued into March 2025. According to investigators, the teacher gradually built trust with the student and used that connection to form what police described as an “inappropriate relationship.
” The case came to the attention of police in March. Officers launched an investigation and identified Badiani as the suspect. Police did not name the school where the accused was employed, and the identity of the student is protected under law.
Badiani was taken into custody without incident. He was released on a court order with several conditions, including a ban on any contact with individuals under 18. The investigation remains open.
Police have not said whether any additional victims are being considered. Authorities are asking anyone with further information to contact the Child Abuse Unit or submit tips through Crime Stoppers..
