Qatar tribune Hanane Djoua Doha WNBA Champion and 2012 MVP Tamika Catchings paid a special visit to Doha this week as part of the launch of the second season of the Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA Qatar League — a youth basketball initiative hosted by Qatar Foundation in collaboration with the NBA and supported by the Qatar Basketball Federation.
Speaking to Qatar Tribune, Catchings reflected on her experience in Qatar, emphasising the global rise of women’s basketball and the power of sports to inspire the next generation. “Being here and having the opportunity to visit one of the schools and see the young ladies yesterday — they’re excited about the opportunity to one day maybe play in the WNBA or professionally,” she said. “I think when you see other players that are doing that.
.. yeah, I love what I’m seeing.
” Catchings described basketball as a “universal language” that transcends borders, adding, “It doesn’t matter where you are or what part of the world — basketball means something. And for these young ladies to be part of the growth and to see it continue to build—that’s powerful.” During her time in Doha, Catchings met with coaches, fans, and young athletes.
She also made a public appearance at the NBA Store in Msheireb on April 18, where fans had the chance to meet her, take photos, and receive autographs. “Everywhere I go, what I love to do is just be an ambassador for the game — and especially for the WNBA,” she said. “We’ll have some conversations, some laughs, and hopefully get fans excited about the WNBA season starting next month.
” Addressing young girls and boys alike, Catchings reinforced that basketball is a sport for everyone, stressing: “It’s not just a boys’ game. It’s a game that all of us can play.” Catchings also spoke about the broader impact of sports, especially team sports, in shaping character.
“For me, it was teamwork, dedication, discipline, communication, leadership,” she said. “There’s so much you can learn from the game itself.” Offering words of encouragement to aspiring athletes in Qatar, she urged them to stay committed.
“Keep playing and keep learning. You have a lot of really good coaches here in Doha who want to see the game grow. Start where you are, work hard, and as you continue to develop, seek out opportunities in other places.
If you’re really serious about it, practise hard with what you have now and continue to look for ways to grow.” Catchings’ visit is a shining example of how international partnerships in sports can inspire future generations and foster the growth of basketball across borders. Copy 20/04/2025 10.
