MORRIS, Minn. — Wisconsin-Superior baseball's trip to Morris started well on Friday, April 18 but ended badly on Saturday, April 19. The Yellowjackets claimed a 4-3 win in Friday's Upper Midwest Athletic Conference series opener but lost both ends of a Saturday doubleheader, 9-6 and 16-12.
ADVERTISEMENT On Friday, a four-run fifth inning was enough to win the nine-inning game, as Tanner Voight and Maxton Howell delivered back-to-back two-run singles. UWS cut into the 4-1 lead with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings but UWS pitcher Kevin Rahe retired the last seven Cougars in order to complete the save. Catcher Wylee Lottman was 3-for-4 with two doubles.
On Saturday, UWS led the opener 5-4 through six innings but fell behind late, giving up three in the seventh inning and two more in the eighth. Peyton Steiner homered for the Yellowjackets. He and Jonny Rhodes had two-hit games.
The Yellowjackets found themselves down 10-4 through three innings of game one. Though they closed the gap to 10-8, they then gave up a six-run seventh to seal their fate. UWS designated hitter Devin Frydenlund homered in his first two at-bats and finished 3-for-5 with five RBIs.
Voight and Rhodes also had three hits, while two others finished with two. ADVERTISEMENT UWS (15-14, 10-5 UMAC) was scheduled for a nonconference game at Macalester on Monday before traveling to St. Scholastica on Wednesday afternoon and returning home for a UMAC home series with Northwestern starting on Friday.
