YOUNG Bolton boxer Daniel Naylor became a champion in the ring in Sweden at the weekend. The fighter, who trains at Apollos Boxing, in Great Lever, won gold at the Sweden Sala Box Cup when he beat a multiple-time Swedish champion who originates from Ukraine and has had roughly 80 bouts. That is in stark contrast to Naylor who has only been boxing at Apollos for just under two years.
However, in that short space of time has had 25 fights, winning 21 and only ever losing to national champions. Naylor has previously competed at a high level in kickboxing, winning several titles for Goulding Kick Boxing. After switching focus to boxing, he is now a four-time North West champion and the Swedish Sala Box Cup gold medalist.
It also means he is now ranked one of the best boxers at his age and weight in the country. His boxing career so far has been an amazing story taking on other boxers with 50-plus bouts in just his seventh bout. Apollos Boxing itself is only in its second season as an amateur boxing gym and has competed in 150 bouts already with a very high winning percentage.
Naylor said: “Going to Sweden has been a great experience for me and I can’t thank the coaches from the North West squad enough for arranging this. “My goal is to be a national amateur champion and then a professional boxer.” Daniel’s parents say they could not be prouder, adding he has trained so hard for this and deserves all the success.
His coach at Apollos is also delighted and added: “Daniel trains harder than most professional boxers I have ever seen train and his success is all down to his dedication and hard work . “He walked into the gym already a very developed martial artist so teaching him how to box has been quite easy.”.
