Court Decision and Reactions
Dennis pleaded guilty to one aggravated count of creating the likelihood of harm after hitting Hoskins with his car during the confrontation. While sentencing, Judge Ian Press stated that Dennis had ignored Hoskins' safety but was not criminally responsible for her death. The judge emphasized the tragedy and grief caused by the incident, calling Dennis' choice to drive off while the situation was unsafe a "very poor reason."
The court had previously heard that the argument involved a disagreement over kitchen renovations, and that Hoskins was holding onto the vehicle as Dennis attempted to leave. Although she was taken to the hospital, she died from her injuries. Dennis initially faced more serious charges but later pleaded guilty to a reduced charge.
Family Statements and Impact
In court, Dennis expressed remorse, with the judge acknowledging his anguish and sense of responsibility. Dennis' lawyer argued he did not intend to hurt Hoskins and was either unaware or reckless about her holding onto the car.
Melissa Hoskins' parents, Peter and Amanda, spoke outside court after the sentencing. They expressed sorrow over their daughter's loss but said they were relieved the legal case had concluded. They acknowledged Dennis' grief and said they hoped for a civil relationship going forward, especially for the sake of the couple's two young children. They also mentioned that they had yet to receive a personal apology but believed it would come in time.
Hoskins, a two-time Olympian, was part of the Australian team pursuit squad that won a world championship in 2015. She and Dennis married in 2018. Dennis, who retired from professional cycling in 2023, had a decorated career that included Olympic silver and bronze medals and a Commonwealth Games gold medal.
