The White House has decided to make some exceptions to the new tariffs. The US Customs and Border Protection announced that smartphones, laptops, and some other tech gadgets will not be affected by the new 125% China tariff. Machines used to make semiconductors will also be spared from the new tariffs.

Apple fans can breathe a sigh of relief. Your favourite iPhones won’t be getting more expensive, at least not for now. Many people were worried that Apple might raise the prices of iPhones and other gadgets after news broke about the US government planning new taxes on products imported from China.

If those taxes had gone through, Apple could’ve faced a massive 145% import fee. Naturally, this sparked fears that the company would pass on the extra cost to customers by increasing product prices. But that’s not going to happen for now, according to a report.

According to Bloomberg, the White House has decided to make some exceptions to the new tariffs. The US Customs and Border Protection recently announced that smartphones, laptops, and some other tech gadgets will not be affected by the new 125% China tariff or the usual 10% tariff on goods from most other countries. Products like smartphones, laptops, computer parts, and memory chips are not usually made in the US. Building factories for them in the country would take a lot of time and money. So, if the new tariffs were applied, it could’ve meant higher prices for both tech companies and their customers.

There’s more good news for the chip industry too. Machines used to make semiconductors will also be spared from the new tariffs. That’s helpful for big players like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).
