A stunt. A sin of omission from the man so many Canadians claim to be Canada’s messiah. That’s as good a way as any to describe it.
“He wanted to make a statement. I am Mark Carney. I’m the best of them all.
I’m a great negotiator. I have managed crisis in the past. I would change the world.
Trust me.” Those are the pull-no-punches words of Yves-François Blanchet, leader of the Quebec separatists in the House of Commons. This time the man is on the money, picking up what this story is laying down.
Remember the phone call late last month between Prime Minister Carney, the Liberal leader, and U.S. President Donald Trump.
Carney has been selling himself as the one who can stand up to Trump. He mentions it every day. Carney has cast himself as the tough guy who can put Trump in his place.
He means business. Elbows up and his elbows are as sharp as they come. So goes the Liberal sales pitch and it’s apparently worked on a lot of people, Carney providing the Kool-Aid of fear for frightened boomers and those obsessed with Trump.
So, late last month, Trump and Carney talk on the phone and when it’s done Carney tells us the American president now respects Canada as a nation. The reaction? Wow! Trump always poked at former Liberal prime minister Justin Trudeau about Canada becoming the 51st state of the United States. But it sounded like he didn’t mess with Carney.
Carney might really be a man with superhuman powers. Appearances deceive. This dude must be a political Rambo in that well-tailored banker’s suit.
Alas, Carney is a mere mortal with an unconventional definition of the whole truth and nothing but the truth. A mere mortal who just ..
. er ..
. neglected to tell us it didn’t take long for Trump to bring up Canada as the 51st state with him . Radio-Canada dug up that nugget.
RelatedAmid trade war with China, Canada back in Trump's sights over alleged flow of fentanylBell: The horror show Mark Carney and the Liberals want deep-sixed now Why would Carney omit Trump’s mention of the 51st state when a considerable number of Canadians are losing their minds over the president and are flocking to Carney and the Liberals as their political security blanket? Trump beaking off about Canada as the 51st state was a vote getter for Carney. That being said, Canadians knowing Trump was still up to the old tricks he used on Trudeau would not be a good look for Carney. Trump respects Canada as a sovereign nation after talking to Carney is much, much better.
It is a headline worthy of the self-styled saviour of the nation. Newshounds ask questions of Carney. Question after question.
The Fearless Leader appears irritated, agitated. He also sounds shameless. Why did Carney say Trump respected Canada’s sovereignty when the president talked about the 51st state? Carney deflects.
He says after the election Canada and the United States as individual nations will sit down and negotiate. That was going to happen no matter who was prime minister. The question is asked again.
Did Trump bring up Canada as the 51 state? Good question. After all, it is Carney who played the Trump card to try and win the election. Carney stickhandles.
“Look, the president has certain things in his mind he reverts back to all the time,” says the Liberal leader. Carney says Trump talks about a lot of things. But the 51st state is HUGE for Carney .
If you didn’t believe the 51st state was real you were called a traitor. Did Trump bring it up? “I said that he did,” admits Carney. He tells inquiring reporters to “follow the discussion.
” He claims he is transparent. One thing was certain. Carney was sure trying to get back on his horse.
Scrambling to get back to the Liberal songsheet, Carney insisted he was the man who would stand up to Trump. Carney said he told Trump that Canada would never be the 51st state. Any Canadian leader would say the same thing and has said the same thing.
Any reasonable soul would wonder about Carney, a person Canadians have not had much time to get to know. He has been accused of saying one thing in English and one thing in French. He has been accused of saying one thing in one part of the country and another thing in another part of the country.
Truth. Trust. Issues when dealing with Carney.
Let’s go back to the Blanchet guy to sum up the situation. He did hit the nail on the head this day. He sees it as “just the show of a man who wanted to pretend something which appears not to be true.
I believe many people in Canada and in Quebec will say: What the hell is that? And if that is not true, what else is not true?” [email protected].
