A passenger in one of the cars in a severe crash Friday afternoon has been charged with obstructing an officer and drug possession, OPP said Saturday. Leeds OPP responded to multiple reports of a two-vehicle head-on collision at noon Friday on Highway 15 near the village of Elgin, about 120 kilometres southwest of Ottawa. Both drivers sustained “life-threatening” injuries in the crash.
Police determined that the initial vehicle had two adult occupants, while the other vehicle had two adult occupants and one infant. The two drivers were transported to a regional trauma centre. None of the three passengers sustained any substantial injuries.
As of Saturday, both drivers were in critical but stable condition and remain in hospital. The Leeds County OPP Crime Unit, OPP Reconstructionists, and OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigators assisted in the investigation. “Numerous” charges have been laid against one of the three passengers, OPP said.
The passenger in first car refused to provide his identity following a legal demand, said police. During a vehicle search, OPP officers located a knife, about eight grams of suspected cocaine, and other items often related to drugs. A 39 year-old Ottawa resident was charged with obstructing a peace officer, possession of a narcotic and assault.
The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear court in Brockville on June 13. Driving-related charges are pending for the driver of the initial vehicle, OPP said.
