Hyundai Engineering announced on April 14 that it has successfully completed the installation of Pre-Assembled Units (PAUs) at the SHAHEEN Project Package-2, a large petrochemical project currently underway in Ulsan. This achievement marks the completion of the entire process—from design and procurement to manufacturing management and installation—carried out with its own technology. The PAU modules are large structures combining various elements, including steel framework, machinery, piping, and electrical components, which are pre-manufactured at the factory and then transported to the construction site for installation.
This method can reduce construction time compared to traditional on-site methods and is expected to yield high efficiency and safety benefits. The installed PAU modules measure 22.8 meters in length, 16.
3 meters in width, 23 meters in height, and weigh 327 tons. A total of three such modules were produced. They were manufactured in Mokpo, South Jeolla Province, and shipped via a maritime transport route spanning approximately 470 kilometers to the Ulsan site, where the installation work was completed safely.
Hyundai Engineering has demonstrated its capabilities in modular plant construction technology by performing the entire process, including design, production, transportation, and on-site installation. The SHAHEEN Project is the largest petrochemical project in Korea, with S-OIL investing approximately 9.3 trillion won.
Upon completion, it is expected to produce high-value petrochemical products, including 1.8 million tons of ethylene, 770,000 tons of propylene, 880,000 tons of LLDPE, and 440,000 tons of HDPE annually. In 2021, Hyundai Engineering also applied modular construction methods in the Kuwait Al-Zour LNG Import Terminal Project, significantly reducing construction time.
During that project, the introduction of modules for the marine docking facility's upper structure and piping work shortened the construction period by more than six months. "The installation of the PAU modules is a key milestone for the smooth progression of the SHAHEEN Project, demonstrating that our plant construction technology has evolved further," said an official from Hyundai Engineering. "We will continue to strengthen our competitiveness in the global market.
