In chaotic times such as these, take a moment to wonder what motivates our elected representatives. Maybe they lack any sense of duty to Americans, to those 99% who have worked, paid taxes, obeyed the law and are now just trying to maintain some sense of security. It begs the question: who do they serve? We could guess they secretly harbor good intentions yet lack courage, retreating in fear of retribution from an authoritarian president.
Maybe their own status and personal finances are primary. Does motivation matter? The consequences of their silence, their inaction, their cowardice are all around us now. Our constitutional freedoms are threatened by an executive branch that openly glorifies dictatorships.
Our most vulnerable are suffering. Unelected billionaires ransack public agencies for our private and personal data. We are all on a nauseating roller coaster ride that is now the U.
S. economy with seemingly no reasonable endgame in mind; it must be just to make us all sick and afraid. People are also reading.
.. Corporations can and will pack up and move operations overseas to mitigate damage from trade wars, but how do the rest of us cope? This president’s administration wants to punish public servants, dismantle American institutions and destroy our very belief that democratic government can and should work for the people.
Please stand up and speak out. If you hate what’s going on, make your voice heard. Our U.
S. senators and representatives have a duty to defend us. Remind them.
If they refuse, vote them out. Erin Krause, Lincoln Catch the latest in Opinion Get opinion pieces, letters and editorials sent directly to your inbox weekly!.
